17th February 2009

Organise an Evening event - week beginning 27th April
Aim to organise speakers by end of Feb.
1. Solar hot water - Ian to ask contacts for recommended installer
2. Wood burning stove - Louise to ask installer
3. Insulation / draft proofing - Louise to ask Gen at Energy Projects Plus
4. Council - could talk about local renewable energy projects - Margaret to investigate.
Aim for about 15-20 mins each.

Patrick to investigate venue - URC?

Could use this event to kick-start a list of people interested in forming a group to bulk purchase solar hot water systems (below). Follow up the event with email to all TTWK contacts asking for expressions of interest.

19th Jan 2009

  • We could think of projects in terms of 1) things that reduce how much energy we consume (and make better use of what we do use) - monitoring energy use, insulation, etc and 2) things that generate our own energy - solar panels, wind turbines....3) Could include water use within the scope of the energy group
  • Electrisave - good for making you realise how much energy is use by stuff in your home, could be good for getting children involved in energy saving, could be promoted in local schools?
  • Financial benefits of saving energy
  • Local trade contacts / recommendations - sometimes the only thing stopping people from improving their insulation etc is not knowing who to use to get the work done. A list of recommended suppliers or companies could be created to facilitate this.
  • Carbon footprint - can be an eye-opener to find out what it is about your lifestyle that's creating the most CO2. Ian has a program that can guide you through calculating your carbon footprint, either generically or specifically for you if you can provide gas bills, car mileage etc. - tag on to other TTWK meetings
  • Other TTs have run guided tours of their town to highlight the energy saving / generating already in place. We could even do this in collaboration with the Transport Group to get a critical mass cycle between localities. Would depend where the locations were & also numbers involved, issues with showing 30 people your loft... (I wonder if it might not be more feasible to create a list of people with certain energy saving / generating features who would be happy to demonstrate them to individuals rather than a single group. e.g. if someone wants to talk about a wood burning stove, they could contact ttwk.energy & we'd put them in touch with those who have them.)
  • We could have an evening presentation by a few local commercial groups to promote energy saving / generating technology, e.g. a local firm who install loft & cavity wall insulation, a firm who install solar pv, solar water heaters
  • Royden park rangers are happy to collaborate with TTWK, could allow us to hold an event in their buildings, might have wood available / that they would welcome help clearing.

We selected 3 projects to pursue in the short term - evening presentation by local firms, tour of the local installations & the carbon footprint calculator.
